The origin of the encierro dates back to 1385.

Since the writer Ernest Hemingway popularized the encierro and Pamplona with his literary classic The Sun Also Rises, the Fiesta de San Fermin has become a celebration of major international impact.

The fascination for the San Fermin festival is driven by the encierro, an emblematic tradition which occurs annually from July 7-14.

This event brings together more than 2,000 daily runners (up to 3,500 on weekends) within Pamplona’s cobblestone streets, and gets
a television and Internet audience of over 200 million people.
